Should you Start Your Own Business?We’ve all had that dream-the one that we toy the idea of-starting our own business. Perhaps it was your favorite class in college, a childhood dream, or an entrepreneurial epiphany you had one day-whatever it is, you think it would make the perfect business. Whether you’ve always wanted to start your own business or have just been forced to make other employment plans, here are the top things to consider before making that leap into your own business.

1.  Money: First things first, do you have enough money for start up costs and living expenses for the next few      years? Many new prospective business owners forget that even if they secure the business loans to cover      their startup costs, they will need to have a good sized savings reserved for those first few years of      business. This is not to say you won’t make any money the first few years-you probably will-but the      chances of bringing home enough profit to pay your personal bills consistently, is slim. Make sure you have      a sizeable savings before taking the leap.

2.  Market Knowledge: Secondly, you should consider how much you really know about the enterprise you are                                                                        seeking to start a business in. Not only should you know how to                                                                        produce whatever the product or service is that your new                                                                        business will sell, but you also have to have a very firm grasp on                                                                        the marketability of the product, the competition, and industry                                                                        trends.

                                                                  3.  Patience: Though many people have big ideas for a great                                                                        business, they lack the patience necessary to achieve success.                                                                        Any business-no matter how great the idea-takes time to build                                                                        up credibility, adjust to the learning curve, and carve out its own                                                                        place in the world of commerce. It doesn’t take just anyone to be                                                                        a successful business owner; it takes someone that believes in                                                                        their product and has the patience to see it through.

                                                                  4.  Time and Energy: One of the most common aspects of starting a                                                                        new business that entrepreneurs underestimate is the amount of                                                                        time and energy needed to start it, build it, and see it through. As                                                                        a business owner on a startup budget, chances are you won’t                                                                        have the extra funds lying around to handle an employee for                                                                        every task you need accomplished. This means that you and/or your partner will be wearing a thousand different hats-from production to marketing to public relations-and you must be prepared to handle it all-regardless of your expertise, regardless of the lack of sleep and energy.

5.  Dedication: One of the most important traits you must have if you are going to succeed in starting your      own business is the iron-clad determination to succeed and the dedication to your business mission. There      will inevitably be failures and mishaps along the way in the early days of your business, but you have to be      able to stay focused on your goal and be positive no matter what. Persevering against all else in the      beginnings of your business is crucial to finding success.

6.  Social Strength: Another underestimated skill in the world of beginning businesses is the ability to      effectively network and gain social ground for the sake of your business. While it is true that advertising      campaigns are effective if implemented correctly, they are more often than not, extremely expensive. This      being said, it is absolutely crucial that you know how to get the word out, far and wide with simple social      skills. This doesn’t mean that you need to spend all your time wining and dining prospective clients, but it      does mean that you should join clubs, internet forums and groups, and other places where you potential      clients might be spending their time. This way, you can not only widen your client base, but you can also      glean valuable feedback about what your company can offer your prospective customers.
