How to Succeed in Working for a Temp Agency

How to Succeed in Working for a Temp AgencyWith the current job market as it is and competition for full time jobs so very fierce, many people are opting to try working for temp agencies. Whether you are considering working for temporary placement agency on a contract basis, because you are in between jobs or just want to figure out what’s best for you careerwise, a temp agency could give you the very career success you are seeking. The catch is, you have to know the best way to approach a short or long term career temping. Below, we offer the best tips on getting success while doing temporary contract work.

1.  Research: The best first step in succeeding in the temp agency industry is to do your research. As is true of      any new enterprise, you should always find out everything there is to know about the process of temping,      different temp agencies, and what skills you’ll need to be most marketable. Find out everything you need      to know in order to decide if temping is the right option for you.

2.  Choose an Agency: Next, based upon your research, you need to choose a temp agency that best suits      your needs, schedule, and experience. Choose a handful of agencies that seem like the best for you, and      try them out. You can certainly bow out if you find one is working better than another. If you can, find an      agency that is most suited to your industry, career, and long term goals. The more fitting the job, the more      apt you are to get the job.

                                                                  3.  Treat Temp Work the Same: Many people new to working for                                                                        temporary agencies make the mistake of treating temp work as                                                                        not as important as full time work. These jobs are just as                                                                        important to both the company looking to hire you and also your                                                                        experience and potential for other jobs through the temp agency.                                                                        Always treat any work situation with the utmost in dedication,                                                                        professionalism, and attention. Not only does this make you more                                                                        apt to be hired again by each particular company, but it also                                                                        makes you the first person they may think of when considering to                                                                        fill full time positions.

                                                                  4.  Take Responsibility: When temping for a temp agency-no                                                                        matterwhere they place you-ensure that you take full                                                                        responsibility foryour work. Again, treat a temp position as a                                                                        professional full timeposition, and make sure you know exactly                                                                        what they expect ofyou and how to do it. Show up on time, dress                                                                        appropriately, andwork hard. Whether you work for a particular                                                                        company for a dayor 6 months, they could potentially be a lasting                                                                        and valuableresource for the future of your career.

5.  Ask for Help: Though you may think that asking for help whenyou need it undermines your attractiveness      as a temp employee, it actually makes you look more attractive. Of course, you should treat this rule in      moderation, as you don’t want to overwhelm your employer with questions; however, it is better to ask      questions to clarify than to do the job wrong. Doing the job wrong makes the work for the company now      twofold, and not helpful at all.

6.  Ask for Feedback: By asking the company you are working for-whether for a short or long termposition-for      regular feedback you show the company that their opinion of your work is important toyou, and also that      you are willing to improve whatever may be lacking in your job performance. Moreover, by receiving job      feedback, you’ll be learning how to improve your work for your career.
